Moscow, Russia

This is a post about my favorite food and drink establishments, stores, dishes, drinks in Moscow.

Preface/explanation to the post:

When I first started running this site, I used to write a separate post for each favorite restaurant or store as I got a nice tasting experience.

Over time, I realized that for large cities it is more convenient to make one consolidated post, which succinctly lists everything that I like, as, for example, I did for Lisbon.

So now I’m smoothly transitioning to this format for other locations as well, here, starting with Moscow.

I update the summary posts on a regular basis. I add new favorite places and remove those that I dislike or have closed.

I will also keep the original posts, you can find them by the word “Moscow” in the search bar of the site.

So here’s my list of restaurants💔

Cheese factory

Ice cream🍨: Tea Height

Grocery stores/products:

Greek and Italian products in Moscow A store with an interesting assortment of all sorts of Asian stuff The chain of stores “Indian spices”, similarly, any Asian variety Olive oil store (olives, products from them and oils) Vkusville (the post describes in detail exactly what I like there) Where do I buy matsoni, Imereti cheese and suluguni I recommend Lao Lee for the fact that they sell excellent Vietnamese mangoes here

I give all these recommendations on a very simple principle (which I extend to my whole life, not just to food), I ask myself the question: “Do I want to go back to some place or eat/drink this or that dish/drink again?”. If the answer is “yes”, then I will certainly share with you what I liked so that it would be delicious for you too 😉

I am also always open to your recommendations, write to me about your impressions and gastronomic experience in the comments to the post, by mail or in social networks (all contacts are listed on the main page of the site).

Grocery stores in Portugal and my favorite products in them

The following supermarket chains are common in Portugal:

Portuguese Continente and Pingo Doce, they are similar, but I like Continente a little more. An important point: the larger the store, the better and more diverse the assortment.

The German chains Lidl and ALDI, these chains are like twin brothers, but I like Lidl a little more.

Also from well-known networks there are Auchan, Minipreço, Mercadona, Intermarche, Spar, but I like them less. Thus, the basic regular purchase of products takes place in Continente and Lidl, and in other networks sometimes, on occasion, something is purchased.

Online purchases can be made at Continente, Pingo Doce, Auchan, Minipreço, Intermarche and Spar.

Gastronomic delights and a more diverse non—standard assortment for Portugal are in the Spanish El corte ingles, especially in the gourmet section. There is also an online store here.

As for eco-bio-healthy lifestyle stores, I most often use the Seleiro network, online ordering is also available.

Well, my love in all countries is the Mix-Markt network. Here are all the products from the post-Soviet space + a little Balkan vibe. The assortment varies from store to store.

Also, in Portugal there are farmers’ markets, bakeries with artisan bread, and small local shops specializing in a specific food area, but I will not review them yet. Maybe some other time.

Next, I will tell you about the specific products that I buy.

Nuances:

I will not write about my entire grocery basket, but rather about my favorites.

I love when the product tastes delicious and good in composition. A good one is when there is nothing superfluous that is required for its preparation. That is, at a minimum of any thickeners, hardeners, sweeteners, dyes and other improvising pieces.

I didn’t notice a clear correlation between cost and quality. That is, expensive is not a guarantee of quality, but cheap is not always terrible.

I also note that it will be about those products that have plus or minus the same stable quality.

In Continente I buy:

Gallo Azeite Virgem Extra Sublime Olive Oil

I like it because the oil itself is delicious, and the dispenser is perfect – it does not spill and does not stain the bottle like most other oils. In addition, an iron lid can sometimes hurt your hands, and a plastic one (like this oil) is unlikely. In general, it is convenient. I love Greek olive oils most of all, but Portuguese ones are in second place for me, and not Italian and Spanish ones at all, so be guided by your taste in any case.

Balsamic Vinegar Ponti Vinagre Balsamico Bio

Ideal composition: only wine vinegar and grape must. And it tastes delicious, plus the bottle is quite large, it’s always more environmentally friendly and profitable.

The aforementioned oil and balsamic can be found not only in Continente.

Oat milk Bebida Vegetal de Aveia Berief

At the moment, this is my favorite both in taste, and in consistency, and in the way milk behaves in coffee. The composition is as simple as I like: water, oats, vegetable oil, sea salt.

I do not like when guargams, sweeteners and vitamins are added to vegetable milk. If I need to drink vitamins, I’ll somehow choose which ones myself and buy them separately.

Canned tuna

I had a long tasting of different cans from different stores, in the end I chose these two:

Atum ao Natural Ramirez When Ramirez tuna is not available, I buy Atum Posta ao Natural Continente Equilíbrio

They are not salty, the smell is normal, not smelly (as it happens), the pieces of fish are whole, not dust.

I most often use canned tuna for a very tasty salad with mozzarella, for a morning burger with a poached egg, as well as for a tuna and cheddar sandwich, and pasta.

Chicken eggs

I am very sensitive to the taste of eggs, especially when you eat them almost in their original form (poached egg, egg in a bag), and its taste is clearly clear.

I like the taste of eggs from free-range chickens. On the packaging of such eggs is marked “Ar Livre”. Of course, I tasted different eggs from different chickens, including without this mark. And there are also delicious eggs there, BUT not every time, but if you’re lucky. The same manufacturer, the same store, and the eggs taste different. I don’t need such Russian roulette)))

You can buy eggs “Ar Livre” in any store from any manufacturer, but most often I buy these Ovos de Ar Livre Classe M/L Continente.

Grissini Breadsticks Gressinos Integrais Continente

In ordinary non-healthy food stores, it is difficult to find cookies and bread products that have a good composition. In this case, the composition is as follows: my favorite whole wheat flour, plain wheat flour, olive oil, water, salt.

Why do we need these sticks: instead of crackers in soup, it’s especially cool in the summer hot season with gazpacho, it’s delicious to dip in cottage cheese or melted cheese, it’s delicious to put in salads, instead of crackers, especially in Balkan, where there are tomatoes and feta. Grissini are imbued with aromas and, together with the rest of the ingredients, it is divinely delicious. I love them and eat them in pure form with coffee instead of cookies.

Since I started talking about coffee, I’ll tell you more about nut and fruit bars, which I also like to eat with it.

Many different bars are sold in different stores, but almost all of them have a terrifying composition and calorie content.

I found 2 good manufacturers for myself:

Barras Cruas de Cacau e Avelã sem Glúten Continente Equilíbrio and Barras Cruas de Maçã e Canela sem Glúten Continente Equilíbrio

Any from Rude Health, I like Barra Batata Doce e Cacau sem Glúten and Barra Amendoim sem Glúten

Vegetables

Tomatoes that taste and smell like sweet pink tomatoes Mini Tomate Coração Sweet Continente Seleção

Cucumbers in Portugal are delicious only in mini format, that is, Pepino Mini

I buy similar ones at Lidl and Pingo Doce, and they are also available at Auchan.

Baked Pimento Vermelho Assado sweet pepper, it’s delicious to add it to salads, but my favorite is to make delicious bruschetta with pesto and goat cheese with it

Avocado Hass is the most successful and ripe (yes, avocado is a neuter noun) comes across in Continente and exactly what is on the link, although this is the most budget option in the store.

Leaf salad Salada Gourmet Continente. It is already washed, which is convenient, and there is my favorite radicchio salad in the composition. A great salad mix for almost any salad.

Fruits

I will highlight only pears and grapes in this section, because everything else, plus or minus, is everywhere, or has an unstable quality depending on the season / delivery.

Pera Packham’s pear is my ideal pear, which I haven’t seen in other stores, or haven’t noticed. It is not sweet, very hard, like a potato. Imeno such a pear I like to eat))) For cooking, it is better to buy a classic conference.

Seedless grapes(!)

I rarely see seedless grapes here, and it is white (the local red grapes have a bitter skin). In general, the most successful in taste and price is Uva Branca sem Grainha

I used to buy apple puree here without any additives from ANDROS, but it disappeared from sale in all stores. I hope this is temporary, because it’s very tasty to add it to Greek yogurt, and on top of my granola. Or make oatmeal cookies based on it.

Disinfecting wet wipes Green Shield in blue packaging

The only factor in choosing wet cleansing wipes is their minimal aromatization. I’m looking for either completely odorless ones (I haven’t found them in Portugal yet), or from which the smell instantly disappears, like from these.

And Septona small pocket wet wipes are also in blue packaging, selected according to the same principle. The smell is a little more persistent than that of the big ones, but this is the best I found of the small ones, others stink for up to several days.

In Lidl I buy (there will be no links, but pictures, because there is no online store):

The little cucumbers already mentioned above.

Fish (dorada mostly)

Because it is delicious, packed hermetically and cleaned. Comfortable, does not smell, does not stain anything.

Here for me the most delicious Greek yogurt Milbona, exactly the one in the picture below. Without additives and not fat-free.
Precar camembert cheese is also Milbona, which is ideal for baking.

Muesli with normal composition or from the brand Crownfield:

Or these are Muesli Hahne Bircher

Gedza from VICI. From the entire assortment, it is the vegetables that are delicious. The composition is good, other manufacturers have a horror in general. They are especially good if you make a sauce based on mayonnaise, ground chili pepper, garlic and soy sauce. And you can also make express ramen with them.

In Seleiro I buy:

I try different things here, but my base is household chemicals without any flavors from the Sodasan brand, namely:

Laundry detergent Hand soap Dishwashing detergent

And from food on a regular basis is purchased:

Dijon mustard and Yeast-free whole grain bread

In Intermarche I can distinguish two types of cheeses:

Camembert for baking

And cottage cheese for anything: for salads, sandwiches, cheesecakes, etc. An extremely good composition. There is a straight version and a light fat-free version, both are good. I take light mostly.

In Mix-Markt I buy:

There are also a lot of things and different things, but the base is: buckwheat (the main thing is not Makfa), I liked the Altai buckwheat the most.

Horseradish and sauerkraut, these are:

Cabbage contains only cabbage, carrots and salt.

Horseradish composition is also ok, but it needs to be slightly refined to the ideal: I add salt, cane sugar, vinegar of any kind and a little boiled water to taste. I give it to stand for at least a day so that it marinates and is salted. Sometimes I add a little sour cream to horseradish.

Such a horseradish is perfect for both rulke and Olivier.

Similar reviews for other countries:

Croatia Montenegro Turkey Georgia USA

At the very beginning of the formation of the site, I wrote a separate post about each product / store I liked, later I began to make such collections by country.

So, interesting stores or products I liked outside the collections can be found in the “grocery basket” section and in the country recommendations.

I don’t know how much these reviews are relevant now, but I hope you will learn something useful there for yourself.

If you have something to add, please write to me, I will try everything and update the list.

Rome, Italy

On a trip in 2022, 2 more were added to your favorite places in Rome:

“DOC” Cruderia EnoBistrot is a restaurant specializing in meat tartare, carpaccio and Roman pizza. It is these specialties that I recommend ordering, well, very tasty.

Kebab station is the perfect shawarma! Excellent meat, also pleased with the variety of fillings and sauces. They work around the clock, which is absolutely fine.

Evora, Portugal

Pastelaria Conventional Pao de Rala is a wonderful place with a lot of traditional Portuguese and monastery desserts. Sweets of excellent quality, most importantly not cloying, like everywhere else.

A very pleasant atmosphere inside, decor with beautiful tiles and very interesting interior details.

Moscow 2022, Russia

During this visit to Moscow, I liked the following places:

Olluco

This place became my number 1 in Moscow. An interesting concept of combining Peruvian traditions and traditions of the place where the restaurant is open, a talented chef, excellent execution of dishes, pleasant atmosphere, excellent service. I would give 2 Michelin stars. A must-visit!

MeGoBari is a great Georgian classic. I especially recommend Adjarian khachapuri tsomgamotslili, khinkali kalakuri, vegetable salad with nuts.

Tea height. The house of tea and ice cream.

A wonderful place with great tea and unique ice cream. There are several hundred varieties, all from natural products, and not cloying. Seasonality of products is observed, which pleases. That is, in summer ice cream from persimmon or feijoa will not be offered to you, but it will be offered from mulberry or watermelon. I love it!

Nazare, Portugal

Rosa Dos Ventos is a pleasant seafood restaurant, I really liked the local shellfish Ameijoas à Bulhão Pato. In general, it seems that you can order any dish here, and it will be delicious.

Wintering / vesnovka in Croatia (about food)

This is a post about where in Croatia to eat, drink, buy groceries, and which ones deserve attention.

Nuance:

In winter / early spring / late autumn, there are much fewer locations. Places from the Michelin Guide are almost all closed with a few exceptions. In especially tourist cities like Dubrovnik, Split and Sibenik, you can generally stay hungry, let alone get a gastronomic experience. There are closed doors everywhere, and there is no information about when they will be opened either on the website or on these very doors))) So, if you are visiting the country in the summer, then you will have a wider choice.

Restaurants:

Dubrovnik (I wrote about it earlier here).

Split

In this city, most of the establishments are closed in winter, since the coffee shops are open. Excellent specialty coffee can be enjoyed at 4 coffee soul food and at D 16.

Rovinj Augusto Specialty Coffee shop is a wonderful coffee shop, the coffee is amazing. Straight love❤️

Opatija Pizzeria Roko – I recommend pizza, it’s excellent here. And in all establishments of the Roko network.

Kaokakao – I recommend pistachio cake here.

Where did I buy groceries in and around Opatija:

The only decent big store in the city is Spar.

In addition to Spar, the city has a pleasant grocery market in the city center (Trznica Opatija) and a small Konzum store next to it. All other supermarkets have a very poor assortment.

Peanut paste, alternative types of flour and other useful joys are sold at the BIPA cosmetics store.

I also recommend a chain of healthy lifestyle stores – Tvornica Zdrave Hrane (I was in a store in Rijeka).

There is awesome sourdough bread in Cafe Romero.

Divine coffee (photo in the carousel) I bought in a very non-trivial place on the advice of the owner of the rented apartment, in the cafe Barocco. Moreover, it is ideal for Turks, it was burned out in a coffee machine to my taste.

Products

There are many different products in Croatia, but they do not always have a good composition. Therefore, below I keep photos of exactly those positions that I have been selecting for a long time according to this criterion:

Montenegro, my wintering experience (part two about food)

This is the second post from the series “wintering in Montenegro” about restaurants, grocery stores and products that I liked. I haven’t been everywhere, but from what I managed, I chose the most delicious)

Two nuances about the cuisine of the country.

  1. In Montenegro, you should not look for gastronomic delights (even in the capital), but seafood, meat and delicious vegetables / fruits – yes. Comfort food.
  2. There are much fewer locations in winter, so if you visit the country in the summer, you will have a wider choice.

Restaurants (I have already written about this in the Montenegro section, but I will supplement myself a little).

Tivat. Not that it’s a straight recommendation, but if you suddenly want to:

Steak is for you at Steak House Gallardo

The wine is the most diverse and diverse – in Crush Winebar

Breakfast – in One.

I also had restaurants Adriatica, Verige65, Konoba Ribar, Ribarsko Selo and Dobrec on my list. But I just didn’t get there in them. There is a high probability that it is good there.

OYSTER FARMS

If you like oysters and mussels, this is just a must. The taste of freshly caught oysters is a thousand times fresher and thinner than in a restaurant. Two farms are especially popular here (contacts below). They work on the principle of shop + cafe. That is, you can buy a bundle of shells at home, or sit down at unpretentious non-restaurant tables and immediately taste the delicacy.

By the way, there is a chance that those who do not like oysters can try these.

1 farm. Uzgajaliste Skolki Kamenari is located near Kamenari Ferry and Adriatica Restaurant. In summer it works from 12.00 to 18.00, in winter they need to write or call in advance (+382 68 751 674 ) to arrange a visit. Well, very friendly comrades, they speak English well.

2 farm. Oysters mussels restaurant is located in the Bay of Kotor between the towns of Risan and Perast. In winter, I also recommend writing in advance, the number +382 67 548 535 .

Grocery stores (in Tivat and nearby)

Sodimag is an excellent delicatessen and seafood store, for me it is the best in the entire Bay of Kotor. A large assortment, excellent quality of products and, most importantly, their freshness pleasantly surprised me.

A very small private shop Ribarnica Dekoviç. Here you can buy something that will not be in any fish shop, but it all depends on the catch. There is also a freeze. It is better to come before 12, and even better – before 10 in the morning.

There are 2 more Montefish fish shops in the city (in the very center and a big one on the outskirts), but they are not as cool as Cogimar, and the freshness of “fresh” fish is sometimes questionable. But when there is no car, it is a normal option.

The butcher shop is good in the Franca chain of stores. There are also 2 shops, one in the center and a large one on the outskirts.

I liked to buy cheeses and just different products on the Voli network. There are also two of them (one in Porto Montenegro, the second in the city). In Porto, the assortment is more delicate, and in the city store there was one of my favorite cheeses (Montegot – photo).

Also a good chain of IDEA stores. There have been products that are not represented in Voli.

Another nice little shop and cooking in Porto is Portokali. It is small, but there is any difference that you will not find in other stores. In that case, English tea, mustard of non-local bottling, aged balsamics, truffle pastes, different cereals, etc.

Healthy lifestyle department, do not be surprised, in the Balkans usually in cosmetics stores. So for all sorts of chia, etc. – to the Cosmetics Market store. There is also another healthy lifestyle store, but without a name and it is not on Google, but if you type Magnolia in the search, then the route to them will lead you to the store.

There is a fruit market in the building where the Montefiche store is located in the city center, but in winter it doesn’t really work. In the summer (I saw the photo) There’s an abundance there. In winter, I bought vegetables and fruits in ordinary shops and small shops. My favorite can be found if you type Piljara in a Google search. This is the name of another store, but they are nearby.

And the last Mix Markt store is an international network of SSSROV products. There I bought buckwheat, normal oatmeal of long cooking, pita bread, etc. But there are a lot of products with poor composition, you definitely need to study it before buying.

Products (photos will be below):

I listed only local products that I particularly liked. There are three types of goat cheese: hard in butter (with rosemary), young cheese and camembert in chestnut leaves. The most delicious eggs were exactly the same as in the photo. All the boxes there are very similar, easy to confuse, be careful. And I use applesauce as a sauce or as a base for cookies. And that’s exactly what this puree looks like an apple, all the others are buee. I bought everything in Voli.

Bon appetit!

Montenegro, my wintering experience

I am writing a post that would be useful to me before I decided to try wintering in Montenegro. I’ll even make two posts. This one is about all sorts of life hacks and nuances, and the second one is about food, shops and restaurants.

General information about entry:

During the off-season, Russians can stay in Montenegro continuously for up to 30 days, during the season – from April 1 to October 31 – for up to 90 days (it is better to check the exact dates in each particular year on the consulate’s website). Everything is changing.

That is, during the winter, you either need to make a residence permit, or go abroad every 30 days, this is called a visa. I love to travel, so during this winter I traveled from Montenegro to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia. Also, the locals here offer a service – to leave and enter in one day.

After arriving in the country, according to the law of Montenegro, you must immediately register at the tourist center. They are in every city, there are 3 locations in Tivat. The cost of the service is approximately 1 euro for 1 day of stay in the country. To register, you need a residential address. Everyone is afraid that without this document there may be large fines, but in fact it has never been asked anywhere.

As for the covid topic:

❕For winter 21/22

To enter, you need either a PCR / atigen test, or a certificate of a previous illness or vaccination. It is also better to clarify this information right before arrival.

I don’t observe any special measures, no one goes in masks, only sometimes they ask in grocery stores. Everything is very unobtrusive. In general, in the Balkans you forget that a pandemic has been declared.

If you need to take a test in Montenegro, then I recommend the Moj Lab network of laboratories. A copy of the document is sent to the mail. With a seal, they are handed out if you need it.

About cities:

Before renting an apartment, I had to go all over the coast to figure out where I would like to stay. I have an impression of the cities. I’ll share it, but it’s very subjective, you know.

Bar is a port city. Architecturally featureless, quite large. From here there is a ferry to Bari. But the old town is cute, even though they’re cute everywhere.

Budva is our Sochi. There are a lot of high-rise buildings, a huge Russian-speaking community, in general it seems that there are almost no Montenegrins here. But all the “eyelashes”, “nails” and yoga are here.

The bar and Budva are in the open sea. All subsequent towns are located in the picturesque Bay of Kotor.

Herceg Novi – the spirit of the sanatorium is hovering here. Everything is so cute-dilapidated) This is a multi-level city and therefore full of stairs, that is, you can swing the back of your thighs every day without going to the gym.

Kotor is also on the mountain, and I didn’t quite understand it. It’s like there are just a lot of houses around the old town.

Tivat is my choice. Small, cozy, neat, cute, clean, there is some kind of separate garbage collection. Since a marina for superyachts (Porto Montenegro) has been built here, both the infrastructure and the service are slightly higher than in other cities. In Montenegro there are similar respectable resorts Luštica Bay and Portonovi, but there are very tiny towns. And there is even an airport in Tivat, which is incredibly convenient. There is also a fitness center, medical facilities, playgrounds, a park, a beautiful promenade, a few clothing stores in Porto, restaurants, food shops, small markets. Minus – no cultural program.

Ideally, to have a car here, but even without it it’s OK. Convenient taxi company Red Taxi. You can write to them in Viber, set a time, etc. They go by the counter.

How to choose an apartment

  1. The cutest selection of apartments on Airbnb and Booking. Local sites are clumsy, there are a lot of irrelevant ads. Realtors ignore your request, spamming unsuitable options, plus add their commission to the price. So it’s better to communicate directly with the owners.
  2. Before you rent an apartment for a long time, you should definitely live in it for at least a couple of days to understand how you are there.
  3. In Montenegro, construction sites are prohibited in the season, but out of season (November-May) they bloom in riotous color almost everywhere, so it is better to choose an apartment away from all this so that the noise does not bother.
  4. I recommend renting an apartment that gets maximum sun. I do this everywhere, but in Montenegro it is especially important, since the darkened areas of the apartment are prone to mold. The first floor is not recommended at all, only if there are Underfloor heating, the house is new and renovated.
  5. Heating. I recommend an apartment with several heating sources. For example, electric batteries /underfloor heating and air conditioning. This is in case there are suddenly very cold nights, so as not to freeze for sure. It is also very important to have a heat source in the bathrooms, otherwise it will be a cryo chamber. And another important point is good double–glazed windows. I highly recommend checking this so that there are no defects and no air / sound penetrates anywhere.
  6. Mosquito nets are not needed in winter, all flies are asleep, there are no mosquitoes. In the summer, I think this ppc is relevant.

If I still remember something, I will add it. If you have any questions, ask them, preferably in the comments, so that this information is available to everyone.
